However, in David's case, his mother does not display any of these characteristics towards him. In fact, it has absolutely no relationship with him. David begins to realize that his mother, Emily, is not very "motherly". Three other characters in the novel who are mother figures to David are Mrs. Wender, Uncle Axle, and Rosalind. These characters played the role of her mother in various ways. First, Mrs. Wender is a great mother figure for David because she is able to show him affection that he doesn't get from his mother. When David was at the Wenders' house before they left, Mrs. Wenders had hugged him. According to David's antiphon, he was evidently not used to such an expression of feelings from his mother. I find this extremely scandalous because a mother's hug is confirmation, for the person receiving the hug, that they have someone who loves them....
