Shoes play a significant role in revealing an individual's character, personality, and perspective, gained through important life experiences. In Cinderella, the glass slippers are used to portray the character of Cinderella. Glass is fragile and breaks easily; However, Cinderella's glass slippers never break, despite the impact of weight and occasional falls. Likewise, Cinderella never bends to her disrespectful stepsisters' harsh conditions and never-ending list of household chores (Cinderella's gla...). In mythology, Hermes's superior personality as a god is expressed through the winged sandals, which Homer called “divine and golden” (Talaria). In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, the united perspective of the soldiers, formed during the difficulties of the First World War, is represented through the boots. Soldiers experience a shift in perspective as emotion and sensitivity are replaced by the ethic of survival at all costs. After Kemmerich's leg is amputated, Müller's only goal is to inherit Kemmerich's shoes. The expected grief and comfort were non-existent. The soldiers had learned not to give in to their feelings amid the ravages of war. “We have lost the meaning of the other considerations, because they are artificial. For us, only the facts are really important. And good boots are hard to find” (Remarque 21). Good boots make feet healthier, making the soldier stronger, better protected from blisters, frostbite, cuts, etc. “The First World War cost the lives of around 6,000 men a day” (40 Amaz…). War was about survival of the fittest, and stronger soldiers were more likely to survive. The value of the boots apparently exceeded the value placed on human life... middle of paper...
