Topic > Knowledge of Race and the Theory of Whiteness

One day, while watching the history channel, I noticed that the main focus of the story was either on the evolved development of science or on the Caucasian race. At that moment I asked myself: what did I know about my history beyond slavery and all the historical events that followed? I was angry that I couldn't find anything about the history of African Americans before slavery. In my 21 years of life I have taken a total of 12 history classes and none of them talked about African American history before slavery. Once I researched African American history from articles, books, and documentaries, I wondered why none of it was taught to students or shared with the world. I would like to explain and describe a theory called "political whiteness" and provide details as to why I believe it is a big part of why African Americans don't know their history. Whiteness theory describes what it means to be Caucasian in the United States (Rodriguez 1999:20). The details of what it means to be “white” in American society raise awareness of the social construction of whiteness. Political whiteness attempts to shift the normativeness of the white position by seeing it as a strategy of authority rather than an authentic or essential identity” (Bhabha 1998:21). Audrey Thompson at the University of Utah has a web page where she and her students present summaries and research on different topics. Political whiteness is intended to make white cultural and political assumptions and privileges visible so that white people do not assume their position is neutral or normal. The theory of whiteness addresses functions in political and social life, as well as how one's identity manifests itself every day. White cultural norms are... middle of the paper... the other president was Caucasian. When Barack Obama became president it caused so much confusion and anger because the United States of America was led to believe that having someone who is not Caucasian was out of the norm. People of color were also shocked and in disbelief because they felt it was out of the norm for someone of color to be president of the United States. Why was it a shock that Obama Barack won the presidency, because since then people and the ability to learn; they were taught that white people were superior to everyone else in subtle ways. By forcing whiteness on every race, racial problems are created and people don't know where or how to grow up in the world, with the constant reminder that for every step a person of color fights for 5 steps they were simply giving freely to a Caucasian person.
