The health and fitness industry involves many ethical issues, which was very interesting to me. I have never purchased a health club membership, but from reading I have learned a lot about how they work. It amazed me that health clubs push their sales representatives to get 200-300 new members per month (Amend, 1992). This is a large number of people for such a short period of time, which means that some members are not fully aware of the fine print of the membership contract. Additionally the reading mentions that more than half of the instructors at these clubs do not have a valid certification (Copeland et al, 1988). This is unethical because members pay every month for the service of a trained staff member to assist them with exercise and fitness. Member safety may also be at risk by training with an unqualified coach. Learning how these companies do business made me want to hold off on joining a gym as long as possible. Among the readings, the most interesting topic for me were issues related to ticket sales. I've always been interested in ticket sales but never realized all the things involved. Everyone needs a ticket to attend any sporting event, but getting one can be difficult. The guidelines and decisions made in deciding who should receive tickets and how much they should receive really gave me pause. The question is: should a season ticket holder sit next to someone who only attends one or two games a year? Or vice versa it is an ethical issue in ticket sales. I think season ticket holders should have first choice on the seats they want for all games. Non-season ticket holders should be able to purchase any remaining tickets if they have a seat next to the season ticket holder. I think Eva... middle of paper... has no choice but to accept illegal money. If the NCAA simply paid these athletes some type of payment, then the athletes would be less likely to break NCAA rules. After reading the article, I now have a better understanding of the different ethical issues in the sports industry, from professional teams to how facilities are run. . The reading had a mostly positive impact. The article was very interesting and made me think more critically about how big the sports industry is. Now I see some problems a little differently because of reading. The main thing I learned from reading is understanding all the different opportunities and issues in the sports industry, from front office to facility management. Since the industry is so large and ever-growing, the sky is the limit for a great career in this field. References
