Topic > Robert Zimeckis Contact and the Existence of God

The world is a funny place. No one really understands everything that has happened, is happening and is about to happen. To dictate how we were born we use theories to satisfy our curiosity. Theories come from everywhere, for example religion offers us simple fables as stories of our existence and science offers us a more rational mathematical point of view. The problem is: how do we know which is right and which is wrong? The honest answer to this question is that there is no answer. Neither theory is 100% verifiable; every theory has a lack of evidence. Yet even today people are so caught up in what they believe that the planet has difficulty moving forward in the study of how we came to be and there is a constant conflict between science and religion. Robert Zemeckis' film Contact resolves the age-old conflict between science and religion through the myth of the hero. The film demonstrates that if people were able to accept religious and scientific worldviews, we would be able to move forward and discover exactly how we got to this point. This conflict between science and religion is clearly visible in the film Contact where the protagonist Elli has an atheist and opinionated worldview and where her companions in the film share different worldviews such as agnosticism, materialism and fundamentalism. But what exactly is a worldview? To me, a worldview is simply how we see everything in front of us: do we see things positively, do we believe that God created the earth, and do we believe in fairy tales? When looking for the definition of worldview, the phrase that stands out is “a particular philosophy of life or conception of the world.” A Christian worldview is that “there is an absolute God.” A person with a......middle of paper ......and field of science very pa...... believes in science, science involves facts, experiments and tests. They do not believe in God because religion has no facts, no evidence, and no experiments have been conducted to prove the existence of God. Religious believers have been taught to believe and dedicate their lives to God, if anyone wants to prove the non-existence of God. existence of God, in their minds they are not virtuous. Science and religion are in conflict only because they oppose each other, they are polar opposites. Science believes in facts and hates unreliable evidence, while religion is all about faith and believing in the word of God without evidence. The conflict exists because, regardless of whether the beliefs do not coincide, one relies on faith while the other relies on facts. Now, how can one with either view be supposed to agree to be faithful or factual??
