Reflection Areas of ExpertiseThis reflection is composed of retained evidence from the following courses that tested my ability to apply the knowledge I have accumulated throughout my career as an undergraduate student. The training I received from the University of Cincinnati prepared me to use all five core skills. Integration of knowledge 1) Life cycle nutrition - Exam n. 2: I demonstrated my expertise in topics ranging from medical symptoms to the health consequences of metabolism syndrome, to the differences between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, a topic I became comfortable with thanks to my Survey of Biochemistry course. I was also able to draw on the knowledge I accumulated in my Introduction to Psychology course to define and evaluate Munchausen Syndrome.2) Public Speaking – The Caffeine Effect: I gave a speech on the effects caffeine has on the body using the concept of extemporaneous speaking learned in class. However, the content of my talk was based on the psychoactive properties of caffeine, which I learned in General Organic Biochemistry. I also talked about how popular caffeine addiction is in America, which I learned about in Medical Nutrition Therapy II. This speech resonated very positively with my audience of college students. 3) Nutrition Research Methods – I was asked to locate, interpret, and evaluate an original research paper that was published in a peer-reviewed journal. I learned how to use PubMed from Community Nutrition to locate an original research paper, and I already knew the strengths and weaknesses of implementing Nutritio's semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ)… halfway through the paper. .....also observing physiotherapists at work with patients. I learned a lot about the versatility of a disease like Parkinson's and was very involved in the innovative rehabilitation techniques used by the clinic. Strengths and Areas for Improvement: I consider myself an open-minded and empathetic individual who goes above and beyond in educating others in a way this is not demeaning or overwhelming. I would consider my ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with a team to achieve a common goal. I also developed the ability to efficiently locate and integrate resources when planning presentations and conducting research for reports. However, I often caught myself overloading myself with too many responsibilities. I consider the fact that I occasionally overschedule myself to be a weakness when it comes to planning and critical thinking.
