The relationship between people is intended to improve interaction. The family relationship is the basic unit of interaction in which the individual learns to socialize. But in times of tragedy, families tend to depend on each other for comfort and security. However, people may behave differently in different circumstances as some may be ruthless and take advantage of others in the midst of a horrendous situation. The book Night by Elie Wiesel describes the different responses of different individuals to adversity. The book describes Elie and his father's horrific experience and how it put a strain on their relationship during the time of the Holocaust. Early in the book, Elie stated that his father, Shlomo, was admired and respected by all members of the family. Outside of his family, “the Jewish community of Sighet held him in high esteem” (Wiesel 4). During his first days in the concentration camps, Elie had relied on his father's presence and protection to get him through daily life.
