For hundreds of years, sports have played an important role in the development of society. Sports have evolved and changed as people's interest has changed. Sport was the main source of entertainment for the public, entire cities went to see a gladiator battle in ancient Rome. Athletes once and continue to make great contributions to popular entertainment. Sport is a fundamental block of society that has existed for a long time. The news is full of athletes' successes and the progress of sporting events ranging from the World Cup, to the Super Bowl, to the Olympics. The news also focuses on how increased physical activity translates to greater brain development in children. Sporting events around the world continue to increase over the past 200 years, while school-sponsored athletics are declining. Schools are reducing the amount of physical education required, with the intent of increasing academic achievement. This raises the question: Why are schools eliminating an activity that is becoming increasingly popular to try to increase academic achievement if that activity shows a positive correlation with brain development? While I was in eighth grade, my physical education teacher told my class that students could take a zero-period physical education course the following year. The intent of this class was to see if students could perform better in class if they had physical education earlier in the day. Enough students applied for the course, and the following year, Stone Valley Middle School's zero-period physical education was born. Once I graduated from Stone Valley, I moved on and forgot about the experimental course that had been introduced there, until I had to think of an idea for my senior project. I wanted to find out what the actual results were from having P...... middle of paper ...... and the development showed a positive effect. Giving children continuous exercise will help them improve their math, reading and IQ scores, along with their ability to concentrate. However, not only children can benefit from physical activity. In healthy adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, a short session of moderate exercise was able to significantly improve memory. Physical exercise is also able to improve their creative ability and increase the pain threshold. Knowing this, many students, including myself, can get the most out of our brains. Before we have to write an article or do another creative activity, we can do a quick and moderate exercise. We might also study, then practice for a couple of hours, before a test to improve our memory during the exam. Armed with this knowledge, students and adults can try to maximize our brain power.
