Flannery O'Conner came from a well-established Christian family, but her writings demonstrated a completely different perspective on life than her upbringing (Gordon) . O'Conner published “A Good Man is Hard to Find” in 1955, which became very popular due to the way it depicted family values, but at the same time weaved violence into its plot (Gordon). This particular writing style helped her stand out from the authors of her time. Unfortunately he died on August 3, 1964 and would never see the recognition his work had gained in his lifetime (Gordon). During the 1950s, Americans lived in what is considered a nuclear family (People & Events…). It is considered to be a family in which a man is the head of the household, while the woman takes care of the rigors of daily housework (People & Events...). In Flannery O'Conner's short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the reader can correlate the way the grandmother is portrayed with the way society at the time viewed women (O'Conner). Grandma often turned to her family and was constantly ignored, just as women's rights were widely ignored during that time (O'Conner). In this regard, the grandmother portrays the women's rights movement itself while the family portrays society as ignoring the issue at hand. In turn, the Misfit plays the role of the government. When the family first comes into contact with the Misfit, the grandmother recognizes him and tells him that he is a good man (O'Conner). However, the Misfit has his nephews dragged into the woods and killed, which helps symbolize how powerless women were over men at the time (O'Conner). There was nothing he could do unless society stood up and took action. Furthermore, the mother screams "w...... middle of paper ...... with the Misfit and replaces family with society and the story begins to directly reflect each other over and over again .Works Cited"Equal Pay/Pay Discrimination."Equal Pay and Pay Discrimination.
