The story “Brands R Us” is about how commercials and advertising can corrupt people into doing something or even purchasing items. The commercials give off such a charming vibe. When children twelve years old or younger and a commercial captures their attention, they are a little more vulnerable and naive to what's in front of them. In the United States, it is estimated that children watch more than 4 hours of television a day. Children's minds are not yet fully developed and they do not have the mental capacity to know what is right and what is wrong. So, they can easily be manipulated into a product that they have little or nothing of. That said, commercial advertisements or advertisements aimed at children should be prohibited, such as; food, toys and electronicsFood advertisements and commercials bombard you with their amazing products that you should consume. Fast food marketing companies spend approximately $1.6 million on advertising aimed at children. In 2009, the average preschooler (2-5 years old) watched 2.8 fast food television commercials each day; children (6-11 years) saw 3.5; and teenagers (12-17 years old) saw 4.7. Another reason is all the fast food companies, like; Wendy's, Burger King and McDonald's have toys based on the most popular children's television show or the latest upcoming movie. And with over 5 different collectible toys and they want them all. For example, in 1995, when Burger King had collectible Disney plastic cups and I desperately wanted them all, but only got one. Jingles are another way advertising can get kids to pay for their product. For example, Kit Kat bars jingle “Give me a break, Give me a break, break me a piece of that Kit Kat bar.” Any kind of catchy jingle like that leaves you humming the tune, singing it, and leaves you out to g... middle of paper... don't stop until they have the item. Video games are another contributing factor to children's television commercials. Because the time children spend sitting watching TV or even playing a video game they are not engaged in any activity. Additionally, sitting for long periods of time can lead to poor posture. Bottom line, kids are bombarded with TV commercials telling them to pay this, eat this, play this, it will make you cool and you will have friends. Children need to be protected as at that age they are very naive and believe everything they see.
