Discrimination is a problem that affects those whose qualities are vulnerable. There are many examples of discrimination in the novel Of Mice and Men. The characters face discrimination in many different ways, including race, age, gender, and disability. Crooks, the black stable boy, is a victim of racial discrimination. Candy, the old swamp, is a victim of age discrimination. The victim of gender discrimination is Curley's wife because she is a woman. Victims' lives are hard because of the things they have to deal with. Lastly, Lennie is mentally handicapped, so he is discriminated against because of this. Racial discrimination has existed for a long time, judging people by the color of their skin. Crooks is affected because he is black. At that time blacks were considered inferior to whites. Racial discrimination affects Crooks' life only in a negative way. He is tormented by loneliness because of the color of his skin. His lack of company drives him crazy. Only when Lennie enters his room does he feel less alone. He talked about his loneliness using a hypothetical scenario where George leaves Lennie. Crooks' responds to this discrimination by staying in his stable and remaining isolated. He doesn't want anyone to be in there, but deep down he does it to have some company. They don't want him in the dorm or playing cards with the others because he's black. This affected the story by letting people walk all over him, making them believe they can do whatever they want, and ultimately making people believe they have a lot of power when in reality they don't. Age discrimination affects the old and the young. He makes people think they can just trample on the person discriminated against... middle of paper... caused his own death by killing Curley's wife and forcing George to shoot him. Overall, discrimination is a terrible thing. . It's like a sexually transmitted disease, it can be passed from parent to child or someone can get infected if you're not careful. Discrimination is also like the plague. It spreads to large numbers of people, infecting most, and most do not survive. Although much discrimination has disappeared today, just like the plague, it still exists. Unfortunately for some people, they face discrimination from others. Whether it's race, age, disability or gender discrimination. Discrimination has numerous harmful effects on someone's life. In Of Mice and Men even the unfortunate victims of discrimination suffer from the same effects. They allow people to control it and walk on it. Discrimination is like fire... It hurts.
