The characterization of Connie in the story “Where are you going? Where have you been?" touches on the issue of who is to blame for the kidnapping by portraying Connie as a cute, withdrawn girl, a childish teenager who can't decide who to be, and a reluctant girl who ignores her mother. This characterization makes seem immature Connie. When Arnold sees Connie, Connie's ignorance and immaturity give Arnold Friend the perfect opening to kidnap Connie is a cute girl who is won over by her own attractiveness which ultimately gets her into trouble with a boy named Arnold.
