Topic > A Secret Life by Stephen Dunn and Michael Foucault...

Everything is subject to something in the world, whether living, non-living, tangible or intangible. Forces act on things making them subject to others such as society, law, institutions, religion, personal expectations, etc. Those who are able to inflict these forces on others successfully without retaliation hold all the power. However, power corrupts, there are rare occasions when power remains completely absolute, in fact it is almost impossible. While forces work to overthrow absolute power, forces work to preserve it; therefore, the concept of “relationship between subject and power” can always go back and forth. The 19th century Gothic novel, Dracula, by Bram Stoker, the poem “A Secret Life” by Stephen Dunn, and the idea of “Panopticism” by Michael Foucault work together to demonstrate the relationship between the subject and power. From a social perspective, knowing a subject's relationship with power concerns the importance of being visible or invisible. “Visibility is a trap” (Foucault). This is what Michael Foucault argues in his article on panopticism. To maintain power, the trick is to stay hidden for as long as possible, keeping others uncertain whether or not they are being watched. If those who are subjugated gain too much knowledge, power is likely to shift. Bram Stoker's Dracula shows many examples throughout the book of the presence of the "subject's relationship to power." In the novel, readers see the character Count Dracula, who appears to be the main antagonist of the novel and a vampire, living in the darkness of the people around him. However, growing suspicions of unexplained or supernatural events, along with changing times, threaten the power Dracula has over the people of Trans... middle of paper... form of power. The person who is currently in control will not have long-term control. There are other opposing forces that will eventually come to overthrow those in power. If the world remained the same and power never changed, then we as a human race would be doomed to failure. Fortunately this has not happened yet, but we can look in our school history books and find many situations in which some regimes did not resist and were destroyed by others. This is a natural cycle of the universe that prevents the existence of too much power. It is important that individuals living today are able to recognize the power within them and the power that is morally and rightly accessible to them. Furthermore, it is important that people understand the boundaries and limits of today's society and that the relationship with power is fragile; don't abuse it.
