1.0 Introduction The purpose of this report is to study the groundwater system in Western Australia and make recommendations to the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. This report includes the source and storage, extraction and effect of groundwater on the environment, types of contamination common in groundwater, and the method to prevent contamination. Groundwater is one of the key water sources in Western Australia's environment, which is fresh water collected at various depths below the surface of the ground. In Australia approximately 21% of the water used comes from underground sources. There is considerable variation in groundwater use between states and territories. For many areas it is the main or only reliable source of water to support communities and economic activity (Australian Bureau of Rural Science, 2007). Major developments and demand for water resources across Australia, primarily on new resource discovery and iron ore mining operations in Western Australia are a major contributor (National Water Commission, 2012)....
