Topic > The Effects of Clustering on Memory - 2253

As the world turns and time passes, we learn many new things every day. Some we could remember immediately, but for others it is impossible to do so. Therefore, as human beings, we try many ways to make everyday life easier. Word clustering is one of them. Clustering means “similar” or “same”. The way we use it is that when we have a certain thing to do, we will classify the same thing as having a similar or identical pattern or any common pattern. This word clustering seems to have a different impact on every people. We have two types of memory, long-term memory and short-term memory. Long-term memory is something we might remember from our children's experience. Meanwhile, short-term memory might be something we see just a few minutes or days ago, but after a few years we can't remember every detail of the incident. So the main purpose of this research is to know whether or not grouping of words will have an impact on our memory and how time will have a huge impact on the memory to remember any information. According to Cohen (1963), there are two types of categorized words, Exhaustive (E) and Non-exhaustive (NE). This is the same with clustering and non-clustering words. When three or four words represent all or almost all the words in the category, then it is called Exhaustive (Cohen, 1963). Non-exhaustive is a word selected from a huge number of words that nominally belong to the category. In Cohen's research, Cohen conducted two experiments. In Experiment I, Cohen split nine groups to test another small group. Each three groups received a list of 10, 15, or 20 unrelated words, 10, 15, or 20 categories of NE words, or 10, 15, or 20 categories of E words. Consistent time is given to study the entire list. Meanwhile, in Experiment II, the total presentation was varied… in the center of the paper… words in the lists, so that participants could remember all the words and this also contributed to the weaknesses of this study. Another Some weaknesses of this research also contributed to the findings. First, it is the room where the experiment was conducted. Because the most important element in any experiment is the comfort of each participant. During my experiment, the experiment was performed in a warm room, although there is air conditioning inside the room, but it is not enough to cool the room. This can affect the mood of the participants and they only think about completing the experiment as soon as possible and go back. A second weak point is the participants. They know they won't get anything because they help for free. It is very likely that they did not do their best and only completed the tasks that were assigned to them just because they respected us.
