Topic > AMERICAN INFLUENCE ON CANADA IN THE 1920s - 780s

The 1920s and into the 1930s were when Canada began to be more independent by slowly cutting ties with Great Britain, but lost its newfound independence being influenced by America. Canada has been influenced by its inventions, cultural trends and economy. Canada has adopted many of America's inventions into its own homes, along with cultural trends through entertainment and lifestyle. Furthermore, Canada was economically dependent on America. Overall, during the 1920s Canada came under the influence that in 1929 became very similar to America. With the good times of the 1920s came the most astonishing number of consumer inventions Canada had ever seen. From 1923 to 1929 many Canadians had full-time jobs and a regular salary. And with the increasing amount of media advertising, Canadians have been overwhelmed by the amount of flyers and catalogs filled with new products to purchase and enjoy. Although some were invented by Canadians, most came from America. Inventions such as; the refrigerator, air conditioner, washing machine, and automatic toaster were present in thousands of Canadian homes by 1929. As Bill Bryson stated, “[Americans] were, for one thing, so impressed with the idea of progress that they invented things without having the slightest idea whether those things would be of any use. Americans invented so many things during the boom of the 1920s that Canadians were overwhelmed, but one invention revolutionized Canada forever: the automobile. The automobile was enormously successful in Canada, not only commercially, but its mass commercial production on assembly lines generated hundreds of jobs with good wages. By 1929, a large number of Canadian families owned an automobile, and nearly 600,000 kilometers of roads were paved in Canada. America's national product...mid-paper...oss fell by 40%, 30% of the workforce was out of work, a fifth of the population became dependent on public assistance, and wages fell. Close trade ties and economic dependence sent Canada into a downward spiral of economic distress. In conclusion, Canada was influenced throughout the 1920s by America, which by 1929 became very similar to America in social trends, economics and products. But has all this stopped in the modern era? Canada continues to be greatly influenced by the amount of American products and media pouring into Canada. Canada has attempted over time to prevent the onslaught of the American invasion, but the American invasion is seen on a large global scale. Hit movies, TV shows, and products, among others, are generally based on American culture and views or are based on American dominance. It is a reign that has yet to be stopped.
