Topic > Taxes as a Cause of Revolutions - 1694

Taxes are the primary cause of many revolutions and rebellions, including the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and other rebellions. Taxation is a system that the government uses to earn money, earn this money to support the government and provide public services. The government can guarantee its profits without taxation on natural resources, products or services. (Taxation 1) One place where taxes were and still are a problem in society is America, many rebellions and wars were caused by increased taxes. Fleming highlights the fact that "No taxation without representation" was one of the famous slogans during the time of the American Revolution; this slogan means that Americans were taxed by the British for no reason, which was one of the main causes of the American Revolution. In 1776 Americans had the highest income in the world, the least taxed, and produced one-seventh of the world's iron. Since the Americans were above everyone else, Britain decided that the Americans would have to pay a certain cost (Fleming 1). This is significant because America was the least taxed and then Britain started taxing Americans causing a revolution. This leads to America being comfortable without being tax bombed, so they bombed the British. America thought the war against Britain would be a short and violent war, with the British bankrupt. America thought it was incapable of sending a large army to fight against. Britain proved America wrong by sending over 30,000 soldiers to fight. America surprised Britain and won its independence by adapting to guerrilla warfare (Fleming 2). Since America thought they could very easily take down the British for raising taxes, they were not prepared for a war and were cautious... mid-paper... once this was done the American banks stopped payments and would not pay their private note (Nelson 2). Another rebellion caused by taxes was Bacon's Rebellion. Bacon's Rebellion happened in Virginia in 1676, it was caused by high taxes and a couple of other things. Nathaniel Bacon, the leader of the rebellion, made two successful expeditions against the tribes, but Bacon was arrested. When he was released he set fire to Jamestown, by doing so Bacon the aristocracy retained power and taxes were lowered. (Bacon 1) Nathaniel Bacon was very upset about the tax increase, setting fire to Jamestown showed the aristocracy that was in power that raising taxes may not have been the best thing for the economy at the time. When taxes are increased, people, groups, and all countries decide to do something to take revenge on those who caused the tax increase.
