There is an increase in anti-female prejudice in countries such as India and China (BBC Ethics Guide, 2014). Female infanticide is the deliberate killing of female infants due primarily to a gender imbalance in these countries. Economically, males are worth more than females. Men earn more than women and are more employable, so they are less likely to be killed. In many countries, parents depend on the care of their children in old age. However, if a girl gets married she cannot take care of her parents in any way, while men are seen as an income for parents in old age. Girls are therefore seen as an economic waste especially in large low-income families. Dowries are the transfer of parental assets when a girl gets married.
