There is a lot of controversy today on the topic of college athlete compensation. Some believe that providing payment would further complicate the issue, but others say it would end all problems. College athletes should receive some form of compensation for participating in collegiate sports due to the hardships they endure, the failure of scholarships to cover all expenses, the exploitation of college athletes by colleges and universities for they play, a disparity between coaches and players' compensation and the hypocrisy of National Collegiate Athletic Association rules. A recent report states that playing at a major basketball or football program requires the same amount of time as a full-time job (Sports Illustrated 2011). Athletes who come from less fortunate families cannot always rely on family for money, and because they play such a time-consuming sport, they have little to no time to work (USA Today 2008). The most influential college athletes have a full-time responsibility to the sport they play. They have an agreement with their “bosses” (coaches) and their team in the form of scholarships. They are paid for by their college education and with it most of their expenses. The main goal of some athletes is not to get an education, but to play a sport (Griffin 75). A study conducted by the NCAA found that players playing for the highest-ranking schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) spent nearly 43.3 hours per week on football-related activities. Division I men's basketball players were also found to spend approximately 39 hours per week related to basketball (Sports Illustrated 2011).
