Topic > The effect of media violence on our children - 616

We, as people, may think that media violence has no effect on our children and youth, but it is a growing pain in our communities and it is paralyzing the minds of our children. our children and the other human beings who inhabit this earth. Teenagers living in this society are constantly surrounded by: violence, hatred, anger and strong sexual content, all of which lead to a peculiar view of how these issues are seen in their eyes. Violence in the media desensitizes individuals and also causes a lack of empathy and disregard for logical thinking which can lead to aggressive behavior. One of the main results of the constant viewing of violence in the media is the strong impact of desensitization. Research has shown that “approximately 90% of movies, 68% of video games, 60% of TV shows, and 15% of music videos include depictions of violence.” Additionally, “8-year-olds spend nearly 7.5 hours a day with media” (Knorr). These statistics show and prove that teenagers and adults are constantly surrounded by influences that affect logical thinking. Other studies have shown that all these influences have had a dramatic effect on the way young people and adults deal with certain obstacles they have encountered in their lives, for example: when some experience death they tend to show no emotion while others are very grieving . While others may have no understanding for those who are beaten, raped or treated with disrespect, all caused by the desensitization of their minds caused by the sinful and neglected music, videos and films surrounding the communities. An important statistic researched and used by many to support the “Desensitization” claim is that “many of the perpetrators were reportedly fans of violent video games such as “Doom” and “Counter-Strike.” (Horton) The… middle of paper ...is considered the most horrendous stage of side effects that some may act in after the initial exposure. Looking back at the article, the example of the Columbine High School shooting is a great example. It demonstrates what can happen to people afterward large amounts of violence and the horrendous events that can be committed under the influence of the media. Another great example would be the murderer, Adam Lanza, who was an avid video game player who eventually led him along the dark path he ended up on.
