The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 was established because an American boy was kidnapped from a Florida shopping mall and later found murdered. The act was signed into law by George W. Bush on July 27, 2006. This act is established to protect children from sexual exploitation and violent crimes, to prevent child abuse and child pornography, and to promote the safety of Internet. This act is also known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. It was established with the intention of strengthening laws relating to child sexual predators. This Act instructed each state and/or territory to apply criteria for the publication of offender data on the Internet. This law requires states to have an established process for conducting criminal background checks on foster and adoptive parents in order to care for children.
