Topic > Stanley Milgram Obedience Reading Series - 955

Why do so many people obey when they feel forced? Social psychologist Stanley Milgram did an experiment to find the effect of authority on obedience. He concluded that people obey out of fear or a desire to cooperate with authority, even when they act against their own judgment and desires. The Milgram experiment illustrates people's reluctance to confront those who abuse power. The purpose of the experiment was to see how far a person would proceed in a concrete, measurable situation in which they were ordered to inflict increasing pain on a protesting victim, and how far the subject would refuse to obey the experimenter. One of the main questions of the experiment was: to what extent will the participant comply with the experimenter's instructions before refusing to perform the requested actions? 2. In the experiment, participants were told that they were involved in a learning experiment, that they were to administer electric shocks, and that they should continue until the end of the experiment. Participants will be able to receive a small sum of money, four dollars and fifty cents, as a benefit. There were three roles involved: the participants played the teachers actually being studied; an investigator executed the students who would be punished with electric shocks; another investigator played the strict role of giving orders when participants wanted to give up. Over the course of the experiment, each time the "student" made a mistake, the participant was ordered to administer an increasing number of electric shocks. In fact, the participants were not administering electric shocks. The student was kept out of sight of the participants, so they believed they were harming him. And he was told that towards the end... in the middle of the paper... obedience to authority, to duty, sometimes even to culture. People are afraid to contradict leaders' orders because they fear taking responsibility for the outcome, such as paying compensation or being fired. As an example of my friend, she was limited by my country's culture and society. Also, I consider the education system in my country. Most Chinese students are required to learn knowledge from teachers and parents. That's right. However, the point is that it is difficult for students to doubt the things they are learning. For example, after studying in America, I realized that there are many errors in the English I learned in middle school. This error still exists in the formal middle school textbook, which my brother is learning. He told me he has to learn this way because he won't get the grades if he answers the questions right.
