Nitya ParthasarathyMillers and RalstonPeriod 5 and 64/2/14Cause of ChaosBloodshed, disunity, and dismay: the effects of the horrible war that divided our country. The Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, marked a change as the North and South took violent measures in fighting for their beliefs. However, the feud between North and South began long before the war in the antebellum period. Indeed, tension created by almost every action taken by the opposing side, triggering war. These conflicts could be divided into larger categories, which resulted in violence. Although many events contributed to hostilities, political disagreements and economic differences sparked major disputes, which ultimately led to civil war. Instigating tension, political conflicts influenced by sectionalism such as the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act increased debates, ultimately contributing to the Civil War. The Compromise of 1850 stated that Utah and New Mexico would be decided by popular sovereignty, Texas would renounce its land claims to New Mexico, California would be a free state, and there would be a stricter slave law. Although the law partially satisfied the North, the South, however, was not. The Southern senators expressed their opinion with concern that, "from the first moment that agitation on the subject of slavery, if not prevented by some timely and effectual measure, would end in disunity... The South demands justice, justice simple and less she does not want to take” (Deverell and White, 440). The belief that Southerners had not gotten what they rightly deserved brought tension and it became increasingly difficult to avoid conflict on the part of politics. that promoted sectionalism because… middle of paper… created controversy and angered Southerners Because the two markets were so distinct, it became difficult to please both sides and eventually these feelings, along with growing tensions, set in motion. to the Civil War. Overall, in situations such as the Industrial Revolution and the Tariff of Abominations, the economy caused many feuds and growing resentment towards the other side led the country to the Civil War. By stirring controversy and producing tension, political and economic conflicts established an escalation of the war. Through conflicting opinions on policies, sectionalism emerged and tension among citizens of the Union intensified. Along with political disputes, differing economies were another cause of disunity, leaving both sides unhappy and ready to make change. This change killed 214,938 people on the battlefield and forever transformed our nation's way of life.
