Topic > The Influence of Celebrities on Society - 698

The topic my group and I covered was about popular icons and their influence on our society. The celebrities I have discovered hold enormous power and influence over how people admire them. Our society is focused on celebrities and holds them on a pedestal as if they were idols. I learned that mostly celebrity icons serve as tools of worship for society. Our group examined the issues of celebrity influence on consumer culture. I learned that celebrities shine a light on brands and products. Most people base their decisions on purchasing products if someone famous uses it, as they strive to be like them. An example would be Beyoncé having a mega deal with Pepsi. She supports Pepsi with her image and consumers find that they want Pepsi because they see her as affiliated with it. I've found that the influence of celebrities on consumers can go both ways, both good and bad. People find connections with brands through celebrity images. This helps brands sell products by appealing to consumers' emotions. A celebrity's face also increases brand awareness. Another topic I learned about is the influence of celebrities on social behavior. Some celebrities have made an impact on society and influence the way people behave. I've learned that celebrities who get more coverage via social media often influence the community that follows them. For example, a celebrity who is seen wearing a certain brand, this influences others to follow suit. Also, if a celebrity says that a particular issue is bad and doesn't support it, some people change their way of thinking and think the same way about the celebrity. Another topic I learned about was the stress that celebrities experience. Celebrities are constantly being stared at all the time and people are in the middle of the paper. I feel like this assignment has taught me more about celebrities and their influence that I wasn't previously aware of. Celebrity icons for me serve as an internal or external reality for individuals, appealing primarily to our emotions. Society feels they need celebrities so they can have an expectation to meet. I think society is simply obsessed with celebrities and will continue to consider them to be of high value. I use celebrities as examples because I believe they are a good reflection of us as a society. For example, when CNN host Larry King had a heart attack and told his audience how it allowed him to quit smoking, this can be a source of inspiration for someone else. Even when actress Teri Hatcher said that her uncle sexually abused her, it also allows those who have experienced the same situation to be able to talk about it since they see someone in high places doing it..
