When you think of a psychologist, you typically don't think about what minority they belong to. It had never occurred to me, before this assignment was due, that a book was a prejudice that they choose to reference in books. In any subject, not just psychology, why would it matter if someone was black, what their gender is? Many psychologists have not been given any recognition or opportunities because they do not fit the “white male” stereotype. When you intentionally type “psychologists” into Google, the results are all white males. Ironic? It depends on the interpretation. I did some more research and finally came across an African American man, who was a psychologist. He is known by Joseph White. Joseph is well known as the “godfather of the field of black psychology.” A little background history on Joseph White would be helpful in understanding why I chose him to write my article. Furthermore, it would provide the reader with information about his lifestyle and why he became a psychologist. Joseph White had a general childhood. He was born in Lincoln Nebraska, but moved shortly thereafter to Minneapolis, Minnesota. White has been married twice. He and his first wife had three beautiful children. He remarried again, but has no children with his current wife. The most important information about his childhood is that he never had the desire to continue his education after high school. Mr White's mother had persuaded him to continue his studies. White's mother sent him to college preparatory school at a young age. He studied at San Francisco University and went on to earn his PhD from Michigan State University in 1962. Mr. White studied at San Francisco University, ... mid-article ... and is in fact helping to protect and exclusively help the public. Currently, Joseph White is a professor at the University of California, Irvine. Any man and/or woman who has done as much for others, has a long career, and an educational background as White deserves to be in any psychology textbook. White is still alive and has been working in his field for about 50 years. He helped and changed many people's lives for the better with his work and his great knowledge of psychology. He will continue to be an extraordinary person known for his great achievements in psychology. Joseph White was just one of many psychologists who had an outstanding career. He was from a good family, had attended two great universities and was well known. Because someone with his credentials is subject to not being in our psychology textbook?
