Many people believe that Southern literature is no different from other types of literature, but they are actually quite different. In Olive A. Burns' novel, Cold Sassy Tree, Southern literature is easily recognizable from other types of literature through themes expressed by tensions between the North and the South, traditional Southern beliefs, and social class. The North and South had major disputes and it seemed they might not agree with each other. One of the main conflicts was slavery. Northerners wanted the slaves to be free, but the South wanted the slaves to remain normal. In addition to the conflict over slavery, they also fought over which lifestyle was better. Due to disagreements, this resulted in deep animosity from the Northern peoples towards the Southern peoples and vice versa.
