Topic > Food miles and your carbon footprint - 544

Food miles mean the distance food travels from the place of production to the place of consumption, the shorter the distance the food travels the better choice for the environment and the health of the consumer. Buying food locally reduces food miles, and growing food can help reduce food miles. Growing food in your backyard helps greatly reduce food miles since food only travels from your yard to your home. The effects of food miles traveled are measured by the amount of pollution caused during its journey to the consumer. (Food Miles, 2013; Eco Friendly Food, 2010)Every person has their own carbon footprint, everyone burns carbon dioxide which is considered their own carbon footprint. Carbon dioxide is burned using everything that consumes oil, gas, coal and electricity. The carbon footprint made by humans increases every year, which leads to global warming, as this happens, sea levels rise and the temperature of the planet rises. The earth now has 7 billion people and will increase dramatically in the next 2 years, this means there will be more people burning carbon dioxide, which will make global warming much faster. Global warming has a great impact on the environment and future generations because the world will become warmer and we will not be able to grow some crop plants in this generation. (Paul Lawton, 2012; Time for Change, 2007; Alyssa Morse, 2013) Buying seasonal foods is cheaper since the food grows locally and there are many farmers who grow and sell this type of food. Foods grown locally during the season generally taste better than imported ones. When foods are transported they need to be collected early and refrigerated to ensure they do not spoil, during transport they may not ripen as effectively as they would in their natural environment, this causes the food not to develop its full flavour. Foods that are shipped and refrigerated lose flavor at every stage of the process, but fresh, locally grown and harvested foods will retain their full flavor. Buying locally and in season is better for your health as some foods require preservatives (like wax) and irradiation (skipping food with a blast of radiation to kill germs). (Green Living, 2012; Michele Morris, 2012)A variety of living beings is a biodiversity, different plants, animals and microorganisms create this biodiversity. There are three main categories of biodiversity: genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity.
