I think the time is during the Great Depression of the 1930s. On page 51 we discovered that John's farm is mortgaged. The same page says: Work too hard to earn a few dollars. From page 52, I also found, does not name any helpers. On page 52 years old, Ann also remembers their good times. Now, they don't have an easy life. They are tired of work.
