Honey, I'm at home“Honey, I'm at home” now doesn't even have a gender orientation, but only 30 years ago it referred to “the breadwinner” (l 'man of the house) returning home after a long day at work greets his wife. This idea of male dominance is shown in the text Mirror on America, in the photo where the groom holds his wife who is drastically smaller than him, showing a sort of dominance that a male has over a female (63). It is also shown in the photo where the man appears to have come home from a long day at work and is waiting for his wife to serve him dinner (62). Nowadays it's a little different, most women work full time and have to come home to clean and cook for their family. Unfortunately, things are almost exactly the same, if not more difficult for women because now they not only have to cook and clean, but they also have to work. Dave Barry, the author of the essay “The Ugly Truth About Beauty,” believes in Mirror on America that women are too concerned with their appearance. He suggests that women are never satisfied with their appearance, while all men "consider themselves average" (35) . Women feel they have to make an effort to improve their appearance because the image society portrays of “beauty” is far from the characteristics of the average woman. The author conveys this message when talking about supermodel Cindy Crawford giving makeup advice: Cindy had all these middle-aged women applying beauty products to their faces; he emphasized how important it was to apply them in a certain way, using the fingertips. All the women did so dutifully, even though it was obvious to any sane observer that no matter how carefully they applied these products, they would never look even remotely like Cindy Crawford, which is some sort of genetic mutation. (35)Unfortunately, everyone, even me, has been influenced by society's view on beauty. I think my vision of "beauty" is very similar to that of most men. I believe that a person's beauty is easily enhanced by their personality. A person's character and personality are determined by his experience, background and childhood. Children are greatly influenced by their surroundings and their role models, whether they are good or bad role models to have. The insecurities women have about their appearance are due to their upbringing.
