Spring is full of transformations and changes. Flowers bloom, temperatures rise, and allergy sufferers begin a long journey of pain and agony. The start of spring also brings with it the start of baseball and softball. By carefully analyzing two representative teams from each sport at the University of Arizona, a sociological analysis was conducted based on the similarities and differences between the sports. Despite the relative similarities between the two sports, a number of differences have also been identified which demonstrate that both sports are interconnected with cultural aspects and elements that may not be immediately observable on the surface. I was a student-athlete at the University of Arizona for two years. In this short time I attended many sporting events on campus. I often wear the colors red, white and blue for almost every men's sport that exists in Arizona, from men's basketball to men's swimming. Yet I never attended a women's softball game in college. In fact, it's important to know that I have never attended any women's softball game before. I had seen plenty of baseball games in my life, but never a softball game. Everything changed on Friday 4 April. As soon as I finished soccer practice, some teammates and I headed to the softball field. That particular night, Arizona faced off against the Stanford Cardinal. When we arrived, a Stanford player was at the plate and an Arizona pitcher was preparing to charge for a pitch. As I sat and observed my surroundings, something became glaringly unaware of me. Unlike baseball, the pitcher was not on a mound, but appeared to be on a flat circle. This was interesting and I pondered why there was no cairn. It was…half of the card…to have a bigger fan base. However, the Arizona women's softball team has arguably historically been more successful than the Arizona baseball team with 8 national championships compared to 4 baseball teams. So the reason for the difference in fan numbers is still a question to be debated may reflect for many years to come. Indeed, participating in both events allowed me to evaluate and analyze the similarities and differences of the two sports. Recognizing that the two sports are culturally different despite being very identical to each other was quite surprising. The social influence that sport appears to have on players and fans also appears to have a positive outlook. It will be interesting to see how each sport progresses in the future in terms of the type of fans who come to games, how teams interact with fans and also the general atmosphere of the games..
