“Friend the Elf, what is your favorite color?” - Everyone has seen the very famous movie Elf. It's part of every child's Christmas. The only thing that makes the movie so entertaining is the social anomalies of the main character. He does things that most people wouldn't even think of doing, like sleeping in a shop window or screaming while running into a revolving door with no regard for how people would look at him. Breaking such social norms would give people a reason to make jokes and look at you disapprovingly. Coming from a completely different world, one of the many things that fascinated Buddy was this magical thing called an elevator. If you've seen the movie, then you know that he acts excited and pushes all the buttons in the Empire State Building elevator and claims that it looks like a Christmas tree. The man who is with him in the elevator obviously looks at him strangely, because as everyone knows, Buddy doesn't follow social norms. Buddy's example of violating a social norm is what I did for this project. Little did he know that in today's society this would be strange behavior, and that's what makes the film so beautiful. So for about half an hour I decided to be adventurous and just have fun. Over Thanksgiving break, I had a doctor's appointment scheduled. The hospital I go to isn't big, but it's the only one in the area, so I knew there would be a good amount of people around to watch me humiliate myself. I dressed for the occasion! Green jacket and red tights. Obviously I could never look like Buddy the Elf, but I came very close. When I entered the hospital lobby, I noticed that no one was around, so I figured I would only have to do this a couple of times to get good enough results. I... in the middle of the paper... see someone. But having a few laughs about what you just did because you looked ridiculous doing it is part of life! I live by the motto that life should be fun. It shouldn't be all serious and work. You also need to have some time for adventure. Some things can be a little weird, like eating with your hands, but hopefully the person you're with has a good attitude about it and accepts everything. Social norms can be a good and a bad thing. They are good, because they keep everything in line and make sure that humans act accordingly in their daily activities. But they can also be negative because they put pressure on everyone's perception of what freedom is and what is acceptable or not. Social norms will always have a dominant impact on the behavior of individuals, occasionally developing them into a new form of person.
