Does the void exist? One of the main controversies in pre-Socratic philosophy is the dispute over the existence or non-existence of the void. Two groups of philosophers support this idea. The first group, i.e. Parmenides, claims that the void does not exist. This is the opinion of monist philosophers. The other group are the atomists who support this thesis and believe that there is a vacuum. This group is mainly represented by the philosophers Democritus and Leucippus. Parmenides opposes the existence of the void. The plenum fragment clearly expresses his opinion: “It is not divisible, for it is all the same; nor is there more here and less there, which would prevent it from staying together, but it is full of what is. Therefore it is all continuous , because what is clings to what is." This shows the idea that if there was a void or empty space then "what is" would move into it. So there is no void. Because "what is" completely fills this space. "Since everything is the same" the volume or density is continuous everywhere. Since it is not divisible, there is no void between "what is". Even “that which is” in itself does not contain any emptiness. If there was void or space in an object, these particles would not be as dense as a denser object "...
