In his primary law, Sir Isaac Newton once stated: "Inertia is the tendency of objects in motion to remain in motion unless an external force is exerted upon them ". Most people live by the lessons of their guardians, and unless a person contradicts them, they continue to live by the teachings. When they encounter this person who contradicts them, they continue to live according to the teachings. When they encounter this person who contradicts them, they will only change their way of thinking if the outside idea is accepted, and so, this outsider is represented by some "outsiders" within Wayson Choy's The Jade Peony - all those who contribute with their various functions. These externals have very important individual roles that help in the development of children, and especially with Jook-Liang and Jung-Sum. In the book there are three parts into which it is divided, and it is in the first part where we find ourselves. presented with a young girl named Jook-Liang who tells us the story through her eyes. Early in the book, it becomes apparent that Jook-Liang's grandmother, Poh-Poh, is the one person who gives most of her attention to Jook-Liang, until Sek-Lung, her newborn baby brother, comes into the world. So Poh-Poh becomes the negative force for Jook-Liang's happy fortune and to bring her back down to earth; the yin to Jook-Liang's yang: “'Thou not Canada, Liang,' said she [Poh-Poh], majestically, 'thou China. Always war in China.'I [Jook-Liang] hated the Old Man: Grandma never let me carry on with my movie star daydreams. {I, ii, 36-37} Ultimately, if Poh-Poh had completely taken control of Jook-Liang's thoughts, she would not have been able to blossom like a flower in the way she was open to new ideas and changes.
