Globalization refers to the expansion of global relationships and the integration of different cultures that interact in new ways. Through globalization people are able to communicate and exchange information. For companies it is a purely economic process: “the result of the market system unleashed on a global scale” (“Perspective: the demands of globalization”). Globalization has made profit the main objective of large companies, even if the consequences of these large-scale productions, both environmentally and ethically, are often overlooked. This essay will investigate the consequences of globalization by examining power dilemmas between the nation state and intercontinental nations, as well as the corporate drive for profit that has detrimental effects on cultures and the environment. Globalization's shift toward large-scale manufacturing has forced companies to move toward localization, or expansion into other nations, and less standardization. Localization allows companies to monopolize power over other nations' cultures. Indeed, according to the World Bank's 2000 World Development Report, of the world's 100 largest economic entities, 51 are now corporations and 49 are countries (Anderson, Sarah). National governments have lost control of world power. Big corporations now suppress the combined economies of countries and not to mention control the working conditions of the countries they have a lot of influence over. Allow these companies to do what they want, charge what they want, and pay less than expected. After all, how else could they be so powerful without excessive profit?
