Topic > Author's Lives: Anne Bradstreet - 678

Many things in life can be a source of inspiration. These events can lead people to leave an everlasting impact on others. Sometimes, these things can even push people to achieve greatness. This has been the case in the lives of many authors, including Anne Bradstreet. Anne Bradstreet's immigration to America, Puritan faith, her distinctive views, and her family were the causes of her success in writing. Anne Bradstreet was born Anne Dudley in 1612 in Northamptonshire, England. (Poets, 1) She married Simon Bradstreet, 25, at age 16 in 1628. (Kort, 31) During this time, many were fleeing England to America for religious freedom. Two years after the wedding, in 1630, Simone and Anna did the same. (Kort, 31) The young family settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. (Poets, 1) This is where his writing journey began. Bradstreet was the first great American poet. (Kort, 31) The Bradstreets were part of a Puritan community that believed in women's education and encouraged women to study and write poetry. (Kort, 31) This was a very rare thing. Writing was considered unfeminine in her day. (Wiggins, 75) Furthermore, it was frowned upon for women to pursue education. (Biography, 2) Anne went against this stereotype. “Anne was a well-educated woman.” (Biography, 1)Like many colonists, Anne's faith was an important part of her life. His parents were strong Puritans. (Kort, 31) This aspect of his life also influenced his writing. Because of his puritanical modesty, he wrote privately. (Kort, 31) Additionally, some of his poetry reflects the Puritans' knowledge of the Bible. (Wiggins, 75) Even though she accepted the Puritan beliefs and her role as a woman, she had an exuberant spirit. (Kort, 32) However, Bradstreet was not like most other women of her time. Brads…half of the paper…plus literature. Bradstreet continues to serve as a positive and inspiring role model for people today. (Biography, 1) Bradstreet's overall achievements in literature can be attributed to his immigration to America, Puritan faith, distinctive views, and family. Her works were an inspiration to women back then and still serve that purpose today. She allowed her struggles to inspire her instead of tearing her down. This is the quality of an extraordinary writer, woman, and American.Works CitedKort, Carol. From A to Z of American women writers. New York: Facts on File, Inc., 2007. Print "Anne Bradstreet."
