In a recent survey of high school students, studies show that most are aware that heavy smoking is harmful, but fail to realize that the light smoking is equally dangerous. Which is very worrying, since e-cigarettes are advertised as less dangerous; despite little research and lack of regulation on social media. The article seems to lean more towards the pro-safety side of e-cigarettes, referencing claims made by others such as “…The American Health Association has stated that e-cigarettes may provide low-risk nicotine replacement therapy for smokers trying to kick the habit. If that were the case, e-cigarettes would fall into the same category as nicotine patches or chewing gum,” (Carstensen, 2) in almost every paragraph e-cigarette use could be a “gateway drug” that leads teenagers to experiment with other drugs because they are still developing and still very vulnerable After reading this article it occurred to me that celebrities really have l obligation to be positive role models. The article mentions an advertisement that showed celebrities such as Rihanna and Orlando Bloom smoking cigarettes, titled "Unpaid Tobacco Spokesperson." I personally believe they have an obligation whether or not they choose to be a positive role model, these impressionable and vulnerable kids look to them for inspiration.
