Robert Spencer Wells, Jr. In Western Civilization, it is interesting to note the differences between cultures to try to determine in which time period women had a more advantageous lifestyle . Many scholars might argue that the medieval period had a better lifestyle for women, but take a closer look and see the advantages of the lifestyle of women in Roman times. The medieval period could be considered a better time for women, but Roman women had many more advantages for a better lifestyle. Women during the medieval period had a certain role with their husbands, depending on their social status. Wives were placed in a class based on their husband's job or social status (Time Traveller's 54). This social status may be favorable, but not all wives have managed to achieve elite social status. Once the woman was committed and married to her husband, she was totally controlled by her husband. Even if the wife managed to maintain the same social status as her husband, she lost many rights after marriage. Women during the medieval period not only lost many of their rights, but also became somewhat of their husband's slaves in many ways. The sexual lifestyle of women during the medieval period was very different between married and single women. Medieval women were not accurately informed about their sexual organs due to poor medical research. They thought they had to perform sexual acts regularly to preserve themselves. The third-century writer Galen was considered an authority on medical information about sexual activities. Galen stated that "a woman's womb was 'cold' and required constant heating by 'hot' sperm" (Time Traveller's 55). One might assume that hu... middle of paper... times when women simply gathered together to escape from home by attending religious events (Invisible Romans 84). These events gave women time to visit and maintain connections with other women while having the opportunity to grow in their religious views. Women of the medieval and Roman times both had a struggle with their daily lives. Roman women had some more freedom in their lives than medieval women. It became apparent that women in Roman times had a more social lifestyle than in medieval times. The lifestyle of Roman women may not have been the absolute best, but it was a better quality lifestyle than the medieval one. Roman women had a more pleasant and less restricted lifestyle, which concludes why they must have had a more desirable lifestyle to live between the two periods.
