Before seeing the film “The Hammer” I didn't know what to expect. I had never seen a film for the deaf before and wasn't sure I could fully understand it. Watching the movie wasn't as difficult as I expected and I enjoyed it. The best part is that it is based on the true story of Matthew “The Hammer” Hamill. The film begins with the introduction of a young boy named Matt. We find out that Matt is completely deaf. His grandfather does not take the news lightly and is slightly in denial about the fact that his grandson is deaf. The boy's mother talks about schools for the deaf and teaching the boy sign language. The grandfather does not believe in this type of institutions and believes that his grandson would learn to communicate through oral education; teaching him to read lips. The film fast-forwards through the boy's life in elementary school. He has been placed in a special education class, when he is clearly doing well; his only problem is that he is deaf. After seeing this scene in the movie, it made me think. Not only was this boy singled out for his small difference compared to the others, but for this reason he was seen as stupider than the others. Even though this was years ago, this reminds me of today's society. Often people of the time treat others who don't blend in, differently. People also believe that they are much better than others who have a form of disability, when in reality this is not true. During his childhood he was often bullied by other children because he was deaf. His grandfather begins to teach him to speak by making him feel his vocal cords as he speaks. She also encourages him to join the wrestling team. It was hard for him to adjust to the team because he would have…half card…couple, but it helped him perfect his autograph skills. Matt eventually breaks records at his school while wrestling there. . He wins two national championships for his school and finally takes his career to the next level. He eventually moved on to become a professional wrestler and then an ultimate fighter. He is well known throughout the deaf and wrestling community. Watching these films helped me a lot to understand a different way of life. It helped me better understand the deaf community and improve my ability to sign. I took into account the advice his girlfriend gave him in the film and it worked for me. Watching this movie made me realize the potential that human beings have, regardless of circumstances, and to never give up on your dreams. With hard work and dedication anything is possible and “The Hammer” is a great example of this.
