The first traces of Shinto date back to 712. Although this is the first physical evidence of Shinto, archaeological records date it back much further. Unfortunately it is not possible to trace it since Chinese writing was only introduced to Japan in the 5th century. Therefore, all rituals were taught through oral tradition. The Nihonshoki wanted to create a foreign policy, a religious hierarchy and basically a system of government, while the Kojiki stated that the Japanese imperial family was the foundation of Japanese culture. Contrary to popular belief, there is no specific founder or scripture that started this religion. Conversion and preaching are not very popular in the Shinto religion. Shinto is more based on the traditions of the Japanese people. Shinto has many reasons to distinguish it from other popular religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism or even Catholicism.
