1. Introductory Paragraph Imagine waking up one day and having a terrible headache. You feel dizzy and rub your head to try to ease the pain. You feel behind your ears and realize that the area is swollen, along with your armpits and genital region. You feel too sick to get out of bed, and the next day you're covered in pus filled with fist-sized or larger blisters. They become infected, turn black and smell worse than death itself. About half of your neighbors suffer the same fate and die. Sounds terrible, right? It was, but in the end the human race benefited from it. Although many people lost their lives due to the Black Death, it was a good thing that this happened because of the social and medical advances that were made. The plague led to the Renaissance. The Black Death was a positive event in human history.2. Event DescriptionIn 1347-1350 (Carmichael 490), life was not good. The Black Death was rampant and people were scared. There were three different forms of plague. The most common form, bubonic plague, occurs when the lymphatic system becomes infected. The lymph nodes may swell to the size of eggs; the skin would become black in spots; the infected person would have fever, chills and headache; muscle pain and tiredness; and a horrible smell. Typically, it would have taken two to seven days for victims to die, and the mortality rate could have been 50%-90%. Pneumonic plague is an infection of the respiratory system. Symptoms include cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, shortness of breath and high fever. It would typically take less than two days for victims to die, and the mortality rate was nearly 100%. Many of the survivors became cynical about religion or turned to more personal piety. Like all European institutions, the Church was shaken by the Black Death, even though it benefited financially.
