Kraft released several ads in early April to launch its Zesty Salad Dressing (Nudd). One in particular shows a very attractive man... who happens to be naked. He's having a picnic, with the bottle of Kraft Zesty Salad Dressing sitting casually nearby (see fig. 1). The announcement is aimed at women, from young to old. Scantily clad women are often used in advertisements to attract the attention of men. Yet, rarely in advertisements do you see a muscular, half-naked man with a body sculpted by the Greek gods themselves. Kraft embraced the science of sex appeal in its advertising for Zesty Salad Dressing. But is this type of advertising effective in attracting the intended audience? Using a sensual image as an advertising tool is nothing new. In 1871 Pearl Tobacco was the first to break the stone of sex appeal by sporting a sexy topless woman on its packaging (Beigelman). Since then many companies have used sex play in their advertisements. Victoria's Secret is known for its sexy ads (see fig. 2), which launched the company “from three boutiques in San Francisco to the most successful and recognized lingerie brand in the United States, if not the world” (Daye) . Companies like Axe, Tag, and Old Spice capitalized on their target audience of young and middle-aged men by presenting their products as “sexual attraction enhancers” (Daye). With a notable increase in revenue, many companies continue with the trend of "sex sales". Sex appeal advertisements aimed at women are scarce compared to those aimed at men. The idea of a woman getting aroused by looking at an attractive man is often frowned upon and deteriorates her ladylike personality.
