Australia is culturally Western and therefore would be expected to score low on the Power Distance Index. According to Hofstede's data, Australia has a power distance index of 36%. Pakistan instead gets 55% (The Hofstede Center). In essence, Pakistan has a higher power distance index. Australian culture in this regard is more egalitarian as people in the workplace expect to relate to each other as equals regardless of position. Cooperation increases when employees consider each other equal (Appadurai, 1996 p.67). A junior Australian employee can easily access his superior, but this is not the case in Pakistan. In Pakistan, people recognize a person based on his position, making it difficult for junior employees to relate to their seniors
