Morgan ThouttSOC 100Deadline: April 11, 2014Spring 2014ESSAY #2Sexual Stereotype Traits: "Boys don't cry" is a phrase that virtually all boys have heard throughout their lives . Male and female stereotypes are social constructs that are used to form understandings of what is expected of both genders. Gender is a social term that means our culture has developed what it means to be male or female. The traits on the graph are appropriate for males and females respectively. I believe that the differences expressed by both sexes are genetically programmed. I feel pressure to conform to traditional traits in my daily life. Individuals are often admired when they conform to gender expectations and embrace culturally accepted and established roles. Personally, I feel it more when I live at my home in Fort Collins. I live with both genders and each person is clearly expected to act a certain way. Boys don't show their emotions, are constantly competing with each other, and thrive on the idea of being independent. House girls are very emotional, are willing to compromise to make the other housemates happy and are extremely dependent on others (this is especially noticeable when they receive advice and reassurance). The origins of the pressure to conform come from the people you surround yourself with. The people in my house are extremely into the concept of “fitting in with the crowd.” They strive to be accepted by their peers and regularly make sure they are. People also feel the squeezing pressure of modern society. Both genders are expected to behave in a certain way and are looked down upon if they choose to innovate. The pressure to conform... to the center of the paper...; therefore, they share what they want. After watching this video, it became clear that my views on traditional male and female traits would be affected. I understand the pressure placed on both males and females to conform to society and the gender roles that accompany their culture. I will make a conscious effort to encourage males to act outside of the image they believe to be masculine. I will let them share their feelings and provide them with emotional support when they need it. I will also look at feminism differently. Before watching this video I believed feminism was a good thing, now I believe the idea is good, but this should change its goals. I think women should focus more on equality and less on the superiority of women. My thoughts regarding gender roles will be affected after watching this movie.
