Paragraph theme Jealousy is a predominant theme in the novel "This Dark Endeavor" written by Kenneth Oppel. There are many aspects of jealousy addressed in this story and the question of whether jealousy will prove stronger than love. At the beginning of the story Victor is jealous of the fame that Konrad gained by saving him, but as the story progresses that small jealousy turns into an important component of Victor's life when he discovers that Elizabeth, who he loves, is in love. with his brother. Victor loves his brother without a doubt, but even that quick moment when he thought, "if Konrad hadn't gotten the elixir, then he could have had Elizabeth for himself" shows how strong an emotion it is. When Victor is looking through alchemy books he finds a love potion, and he knows full well that it would harm both Elizabeth and Konrad, but it is only at the last moment that Victor decides that he will not use the potion. Love and jealousy are both very strong emotions and in a way they are both the theme of this story, and the author does a great job of dealing with the difficulty of choosing which to give in to. Diary Discoveries Writing these diaries really made me think about the total range of sibling relationships, I had never thought about it much before, I have a sister, I love her, but would I die for her? not just die, but give my life so she can live hers? I don't think I would, but writing these journals really made me think that there are probably brothers with that kind of love for each other, I don't know if I find it admirable or terrifying. The type of relationships siblings have is completely based on how they were raised and what their family dynamic was like, what ki...... middle of paper ......about another century requires a lot of research , and it just seemed like he did it all, it all made sense for that time period, no one took out their phone to take a selfie while riding in a horse-drawn carriage. This story was set in a time where religion was slowly being overtaken by science, I found this very interesting because even though practical knowledge existed everything was still quite ignorant. This book, which is actually part of a trilogy, aligns so well with the original Frankenstein, written in the late 1790s, that it could almost be a fourth book instead of the other prequels. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in history because it is set in a time period that is not often written about. I really enjoyed this book and can really appreciate the historical authenticity that the author was trying to illustrate.
