A year ago I thought I knew everything I wanted for my future career and life. But really the only thing I knew was that I was going to get a degree as a special education teacher and play basketball at some college, but I didn't know which one yet. As my senior year of high school continued, I went the fun route instead of the academic route. My dream was still to become a special education teacher, but slowly my emotions about the prospect of basketball changed. I ultimately chose not to play, which started the countdown to my college decision and I only had a few months to make it happen. My decision ended with Bowling Green State University. It fell into my lap because the college was perfectly away from home and had a well-developed education department. During my sophomore year of high school, I took a course called Introduction to Education. The class explored different fields of education and positions in administration. In a recent observation, I decided that teaching wasn't enough. After I get my degree in special education, I want to go to graduate school to get a degree in administration so I can become the principal or assistant principal of a school. Attending Bowling Green State University helped me immensely to prepare for my future and mature in ways I didn't expect. I experienced many new adventures and obstacles that I had not prepared to endure. My freshman year didn't start out the way I imagined it would. College was about making friends, meeting new people, and regaining that instant community, but I slowly realized that most of BGSU were from the same area, so they already had friends. People weren't trying to expand and broaden their horizons. My college experience turned into coming home every weekend to hang out with my parents. As the year went on, making friends became easier and people left their groups, but the people and environment aren't the factors that turn me away from the school, it's the atmosphere, size and location. Since my college decision was last minute, I had little opportunity to work on other college applications or go on college visits. But I don't regret the decision I made. I love going to school here, but I don't think I will stay simply because it doesn't fit who I am, my personality, or the context I grew up in.
