In the novel Americanah, many characters face great hardship because of their gender. The protagonist, Ifemelu, faces difficulties because she is an everyday woman. Recently, in an NBA game Chris Paul received a technical foul for his gesture towards a female referee. After the match Chris Paul said according to the Washington Post "If that's the case, then he might not be right for her." which raised a lot of concerns that Chris Paul was considered sexist. Whether the call was right or wrong, the referee was simply doing his job. It is unacceptable for anyone to call her out of her depth. This simply goes to show that women fight every day for equality in sports, the workplace and in everyday life.
