The book I chose to read for the talk is titled "The selection". It is an extremely popular book, having sold over three million five hundred thousand copies worldwide. Here is some more information about the book I read in the form of a summary. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? The 35 girls compete for the heart of Prince Maxon and the winner of the competition becomes the wife of the beloved prince, and from now on queen of Illéa. However, this country is problematic due to the caste system. The caste system depends on how much money you earn and your occupation. Castes start at 1, being the highest (royal) and end at 8 (homeless and beggars). Our protagonist; A low-caste American singer, whose family is poor and desperate for money, was selected to participate in the competition. Due to competition, America is forced to leave her family to live in a mansion; and abandons Aspen, her boyfriend who she has been dating in secret for 2 years. Aspen; who is a lower caste than America, convinces her to sign up for the pageant, sacrificing his love for her in the process (in hopes that she might have a chance at a better life). Because of America's low caste, the king discriminates against her, although Maxon favors her over the other contestants. America is trapped in a seemingly endless love triangle, where her love for Maxon is no greater than her love for Aspen. Moving on, the reason I like this book is the point of view and the symbolism. For starters, this book is narrated from America; in first person. The quote: “But still, it was mine. I didn't think I could sacrifice my dreams, no matter how much my family meant to me", shows that it is narrated in the first person because it includes the words "mine, me and mine". I like how it is told by America for its interesting character; she is young, naive, headstrong and quite sassy. More; the way America tells the story allows the reader to experience and feel like he is in the story himself; that engages our emotions (especially if you get absorbed from the books.) Next, I would like to talk about the symbolism in this story. America states: “When I sang, Aspen loved it. he gave me a penny to pay for my song. Having these pennies was like a reminder of everything Aspen was willing to do for me, of everything I meant to him. It reminds America of everything Aspen was willing to do for her. When they disbanded, America returned the money to Aspen. However, one of the pennies gets stuck in the jar, but America takes the jar with him to the palace. The fact that America takes the jar with him shows how he can't forget Aspen, who he undoubtedly still has feelings for. Whether it is the point of view or the symbolism in the story, undeniably, the story is very interesting. Please note: this is just an example. Get a custom paper from our expert writers now. The reason the background is more noticeable than the foreground is because everyone else is happy, but America isn't. America doesn't want it!
