Everyone has their own reasons for choosing a specific profession. My reasons sound similar to others you've read today, but they're not. I chose teaching as a profession not for the common reasons; I like kids, I want summers off or anything like that. I choose teaching, because I had a teacher who believed in me and made me believe in myself. Which actually changed my life and saved me. I want to be able to be that support for that child. So they know they have a purpose. It was shown to me when this teacher changed my life. Mrs. Watson was her name. She was my go-to teacher in sixth grade. In fifth grade I was diagnosed with a learning disability and dyslexia. After that, I was able to perform on a large scale. I was in fifth grade reading at a third grade level. So when I started sixth grade, they asked me for help once or twice a day. Mrs. Watson and my mother even talked about putting in extra time after school for even more help. He spent hours after school helping. Mrs. Watson sat with me and helped me mostly with reading and English. She was so quiet with me when I felt frustrated or wanted to give up. I had a really hard time, but Mrs. Watson told me over and over again, "I could get through anything if I put my mind to it." Over the next two years, I was able to increase my reading level to an eighth grade level. Also, keep my dyslexia under control. Slowly, I was able to spend less time in his classroom. I was subsequently able to enter high school with an IEP plan and was placed on the technical track for graduation. But because of his words I never used it. I graduated with a university diploma and with top marks. Mrs. Watson was also there to watch me walk when I graduated. She told me, “that hard work and belief in myself allowed me to get wherever I wanted to go.” I didn't really realize how right he was until college. Even in college, I didn't sign up for a disability plan, because I wanted to know that I could do it on my own. All by myself! At this moment I did. Yes, I may have had to take English 1101, but I did it on my own. I may not even have had the best grades in some classes. Either way, it was the best feeling I could have ever had. Knowing that I'm now getting closer and closer to the goal makes me realize how right he was. I wonder what I would be doing now if Mrs. Watson hadn't played such an important role in my young life. I can connect to a student's life and educational experience. Not only was I involved in all types of sports throughout my high school career. So I can relate to students who might be involved in many activities. I had to learn to juggle school, work and homework. As well as situations that happen at home. I can help students find balance between everything. I also know what it's like to be an outsider. My mother always told me, “Being different was okay.” But starting differently and understanding this fact are very different. I have been teased about my disabilities, so I can relate to those students as well as others. I have experiencein both areas. I know how to teach about being different whether physically, emotionally or having special needs because I was there in that child's shoes. So I feel like I can connect to the students and their lives. Gainesville State has given me many opportunities to connect with people from all over the world. I have never seen and met so many different people, who all come from different walks of life. This allows me a new experience every day at school. Another area that would make me a good teacher is that, I am thoughtful and thoughtful in everything I do. Whether it's at work or in my social life. I feel like the only way to grow is to be able to reflect on the situations that are presented to you. Additionally, you need to allow other people to reflect on what you do as well. Their opinion will help you become the individual you are meant to be. Once you do this, you can grow and mature to be better prepared in the future. A person should care about everything they do, but some people don't. It always interests me. If you don't care about what you're doing, you won't need to do that specific thing anymore. I'm interested in the things I do. I feel if you can't give your best, don't waste other people's time and money. I want people to be able to say that they really care about our future children and what they do. I care about what happens to the people I'm in contact with now and in the future. Gainesville State gave me that feedback when I asked for it, as well as the caring environment. Teachers and staff who know my name are very welcoming when you walk into a classroom. Another quality that would make me a great teacher is that I am committed to all students learning. I am very committed to whatever I do. I've been working since I was fifteen, but I've only had 3 jobs. For every job I have had I have worked for more than six years and some even longer. I give my best in everything even in class. There is a way to reach every student. I may have to dig really deep to figure out how to reach students. I would spend the extra time figuring out the best way to reach all of my students. If that meant redoing all the lesson plans, so be it. But if I put in the time and effort, there is a way to reach every student in every classroom. It may take a little longer to figure out the best way. Gainesville State is the perfect place for this. I was struggling in Spanish and my teacher went out of his way to make sure I understood the material for the test. I've also seen this with other students in other classes. One of the best ways to do this is to balance the content of your education. In my opinion it's funny. I feel that students learn more when they enjoy the material. Whether it's relating it to their life or learning while having fun. I always try to balance the act between; work, school, family, friends and life. I would be able to balance the curriculum information that students would need to learn each year with the fun that students also need. As a teacher, I think you should be able to make anything fun. For example, math can turn into a fun learning experience, no matter what you're trying to teach. When students learn to do addition, it doesn't always need to be on paper with numbers on one page. I have found that buttons, keys, or beads are a great tool for teaching counting or measuring. Students appreciate the hands-on they get. They just don't always realize that they are learning while they do it. It's the same thing if students enjoy a certain activity in a subject, I can supplement it by adding.
