Topic > Overcoming Racism in Remember The Titans

Remember the Titans is a film that shows the conflict of racism in a school called TC Williams in Alexandria, Virginia, 1971. The film follows the football team, The Titans. Gerry and Julius, two very important boys in the film, were on the football team. They helped the city defeat racism. Alexandria, Virginia was a very racist city. There were no mixed-color schools, buses or football teams. At the beginning of the film, a black teenager has been killed by a white store owner. Such things were discontinued after a high school called TC Williams became a mixed-color school and started a mixed-color football team. The Titans were not happy when they found out that black kids would be joining their football team. The team captain, Gerry, was not particularly happy about this. However, Gerry began to change when the team went to a soccer camp. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? His teammates and new black coach began to grow with him and helped him understand the difficulties and negative aspects of racism. Gerry began to treat his black teammates (and black people in general) like normal people, just as he should be. This helped me understand Gerry's character as the kind and loving person he is. An example of the change we saw in Gerry was when Gerry and his black teammate, Julius, helped break up a fight between white and black kids. Yakin shows that Gerry and Julius aren't that different in this scene with two wide shots of the boys mirroring each other's body language after the fight ends. Julius joined the football team because of his love for soccer. When they went to the football field, Julius constantly argued with Gerry. As the soccer camp continued, Gerry and Julius developed a friendship. Everyone did it. Julius played a big role in how they changed the city as he helped them win all the football matches which brought the city together. Julius was very determined to win every game he played and to be perfect. He helped bring the team together to make it the best team it could be. This shows that Julius is a kind and loving person who will not stop helping others improve until they are better. He helped Gerry transform into a loving and open-minded friend. An example of this is when Gerry was in the hospital and Julius ran into his room and the nurse told him to leave but Gerry used dialogue to tell her that he was family. “Alice, are you blind? Don't you see the family resemblance? He's my brother." After watching this movie, I saw the kind and loving kids that Gerry and Julius became after helping overcome racism. The hard work they put into loving all those games and showing people that black people aren't bad people shows how kind they are. This was an excellent film and I enjoyed watching it.
