In almost every single music course that is taught you tend to learn about every great musician who has ever lived. One of the all-time greats happens to be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His interest in music began at an early age. In fact, his father Leopold Mozart was also a musician who played an important role in Wolfgang's musical education. However, his mother Anna Maria Mozart was more of a caring type who always supported her son's musical career. Of all his six siblings "only an older sister named Nannerl, also musical, survives childhood" (Potter). Losing five children was quite hard on his parents, but they didn't let their difficulties get in the way of caring for their other two children. Music was one thing that brought joy to their family despite all the tragedies they faced. When Mozart was only five years old “he wrote his first complete compositions, said to be two short works for harpsichord” (Potter). Being so young but also talented was very rare in that time period. Indeed, the young Mozart was soon considered a unique genius. His young mind was far more advanced than that of most of his peers when it came to music. “By the age of six Mozart had become a skilled performer of the harpsichord, violin and organ” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”). As the years passed, Mozart's musical talent only strengthened. His attention was solely on music and nothing else. When Mozart was just fourteen he was asked to write "a serious opera, Mitridate, ré di Ponto (Mitridate, re del Ponto, 1770)" ("Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus"). Amazingly, he managed to produce the entire work by himself. This was his first major achievement which quickly established his incredible reputation during this time period. When Mozart reached adulthood, he had a normal, typical life that he quickly grew tired of. To bring some fun into his life, he decided to make a change and take a trip to Paris where he was accompanied by his mother. Unfortunately, little did he know that his trip to Paris would drastically change his life. In 1777, towards the end of his journey, his mother had died, “leaving him all alone on the journey back to Salzburg alone” (Walton). Although his barrage of tragedies didn't stop in Paris, he soon felt more heartache when he returned home. While Mozart took a little detour to Munich, "the aforementioned love of his life abandoned him" (Walton). Mozart didn't let that ugly heartbreak stop him from finding love. He soon married a woman named Constanze Weber who also happens to be the sister of the woman who left him in Munich. Together they lived a happy and healthy life despite the tragic losses they faced. “The young couple had six children, two of whom survived infancy”(Potter). Unfortunately, they experienced the same thing that his parents experienced when they lost their children in childhood. At the age of thirty-five, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died on December 5, 1791. His cause of death was due to rheumatic fever. Another cause of his death was that doctors kept taking blood from him, which eventually led to him contracting blood poisoning. Mozart lived a very short life, but he was still able to do the things he loved despite the many tragedies he faced. Classical music would not have been so popular in the Western Hemisphere if it were not for the creativity of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His area of ​​expertise was strictly classical music, because he had so much experience learning it as a child. Having his father as his musical guide during his teenage years really helped mold him into a universal artist. By his teenage years his work had become very mature in sonata, symphonic form, operas and even piano concertos. “All the evidence that he was moving beyond the stage of prodigy and into the realm of true genius” (Potter). Even as a teenager Mozart was very proud of his work. He was nothing like other teenagers of his generation because all he cared about was music. Mozart let none of the childish tendencies of his peers hinder his determination to succeed. Of all the symphonies Mozart produced during his adulthood, "Jupiter" seems to be one of the most celebrated. This particular symphony is highly regarded as one of the “most professional and amateur orchestras” (Potter). Jupiter is one of the longest and most passionate symphonies Mozart ever composed. While Mozart conducted this symphony, he was able to keep the audience on their toes. This piece of music contains a lot of humor along with high levels of energy. In my opinion, I believe this was one of his most famous symphonies because he managed to give his audience something more than just music. Although there were several bits of humor in this piece of music, Mozart was able to change the entertainment game by keeping his audience filled with laughter. Surprisingly, he was able to really outdo himself by composing the entire symphony. It led him to break the grand scale of classical music during this era. Another unique opera composed by Mozart was an Italian opera called “Idomeneo, ré dí Creta (Idomeneo, king of Crete), commissioned and composed in 1781” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”). The success of this opera truly made a huge step forward in Mozart's career. He managed to tell a story through the entire piece of music. It was mainly about the life of a king after the Trojan War. Many of Mozart's peers greatly appreciated the opportunity to witness this opera. In fact, because it was such a success “the Archbishop of Salzburg invited Mozart to his palace in Vienna” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”). I can only imagine how Mozart felt when his old boss invited him to the palace. It's actually quite funny how his old boss who he worked for now gives Mozart the attention he deserved a long time ago. Although Mozart faced many discouragements, he never allowed this to hinder his love for musical composition. His work revealed a “distinctive style” along with “a fully mature understanding of musical media” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”). Mozart's creativity was extremely rare but was also extraordinary beyond the level of a normal classical composer. A rare talent of his was being able to think “of a complete work before putting it on paper” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”).This is a great example of his unique qualities that made him such a great musician. Most of his music is a combination of Italian and German sound. The reason for this is that the Italian sound is more of a "clear and graceful melody", while the German sound is more "formal, contrapuntal and ingenious" ("Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus"). During Mozart's short career he managed to publish more than 600 works of classical music. Whether it was a piano concerto, a symphony, or an opera, Mozart was able to create diverse pieces of music that always left his audience wanting more. This shows that even as a child Mozart “possessed a thorough mastery of the technical resources of musical composition as well as an original imagination” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”). The love of music was literally in his blood. Simply because he comes from a musical background that started with his father. While researching Mozart I discovered that he is “considered one of the great geniuses of Western civilization” (“Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus”). Much of his material is still used today in classrooms that focus narrowly on music or art in general. It is also present in most music textbooks used during these particular lessons. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was indeed a truly talented artist who devoted much of his time and energy to classical music. I decided to write about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart because he intrigued me the most. When I was in middle school I remember learning about Mozart in my music class. Listening to a piece of his music was like finding love at first sight. Just reading about his life and all the things he experienced was very fascinating. Mainly because I could relate to some of the things he experienced as a child and even throughout his adulthood. Mozart happens to be one of the greatest musicians to ever set foot on this earth. I really admire his work ethic along with his creativity when it came to music. It is the symbol of a true genius who was able to share his work with the whole world. If I could go back in time I would love to be able to see one of his works. I believe we are extremely lucky to have the opportunity to continue listening to his music even in today's society.
